I had planned to do these egg carton dragons I found online and the craft at the story time was an accordion dragon so I grabbed three for all the kids, but when the girls saw pictures of the story time parade we decided we could make our own large dragon/lion. So we started cutting and they painted and I made Sesame Honey chicken and fried rice. It was a crazy but fun night in which we didn't get to the books.
Note: Steve has been working late all week--he had to drive to Promontory 4 days this week which is an 1hour drive each way, making the nights a bit more difficult for me. The first few weeks in January he was working a local program with his boss and he was home around 5:30 every night and I think I got spoiled because now he's back to crazy drives and longer hours. He was also just called to be Assistant Scout Master in our ward so there goes a few more nights and weekends. He's excited about camping and the other leaders he gets to work with (after the shock wore off a bit), but he is also worried about the time away from us it will require. Anyway, there may have been a few melt downs by both Mom and kids that night, but we persevered and had an enjoyable evening).
Today was actually the Chinese New Year so we read the books. One was a book on CD, "Sam and the Lucky Money" it was about lessees or the red envelopes that Chinese children get from their Grandparents with money in them on New Years. It was a great book and we learned more about the traditional lion dance too and how the local stores would provide a large lessee for the lion, it was thought to bring good luck to their business. The lessee was considered a gift for the lion performers and the higher/harder the lessee the more money it had in it and the crowd would expect a great performance. On occasion competing lions from different martial art places would approach the same lessee and a lion fight would occur. It was fun to learn together. Lila's teacher had actually given each of them a lessee with a Chinese souvenir inside. We finished decorating our lion and was hoping to have a large parade with family or neighbors but decided to go out to eat some yummy Chinese food with Mimi, Grandpa, & Nessa and her kids. Then we went to Mt Green to help Mimi & Grandpa with their TV system. When we got home the kids did a quick little parade and dance around the house saying, "新年快乐" (Happy New Year in Chinese--even Andrew was saying it pretty good, Lila said I was not saying it correctly). We saved the head and maybe next year we can parade around the neighborhood. :)
Other adventures of the week include packing a lunch and meeting Steve/Dad at his office on Wed after Andrew's dance class at the Clearfield Aquatic Center which is right next to Steve's office. Andrew's dance class . . . first week he didn't participate at all, but we talked it up all week and he said he would participate this week which he really didn't, he did a few of the things right next to me, but never participated with the other kids or teacher. Both of the girls had birthday parties, Ellie went rock climbing with Ellyn Olenslager and Lila had a karate lesson with a classmate. The girls decided to buy Just Dance 2017 with their own money. It was on sale at Target.com -- love my Target card free shipping on anything and it got here the next day so the kids have been enjoying dancing to it. :)
